FAQ on Islam

Why Pork is Prohibited in Islam? Pork is Sin and Sickness

Muslims follow the Divine Law

Islam is an Arabic word which means “submission to the will of Almighty Allah” and a person who embraces this religion is called “Muslim” which means “one who accepts and submits himself to the will of Almighty Allah”. A Muslim is obliged to be clean both spiritually, mentally and physically. For Muslims the notion of Faith is primarily associated with the concept of Knowledge. It is interesting to note, that in Arabic, the word “faith” (iman) is a derivative of the root with the meaning of “to safeguard”. Consequently, in order to achieve “peace and safety in Almighty Allah”, a believer should rigorously follow the Divine laws and commandments.

Islam has laid down the foundation for the best approach in keeping good health. Islamic instructions and teachings espousing health consciousness have scriptural and scientific support. In the Holy Qur’an (The Last Testament) Almighty Allah exhorts the believers to select the best food and to stay away from any harmful food to maintain good health:

O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
[Al-Qur’an 002:168]
... Eat from the good things with which We have provided you ...
[Al-Qur’an 007:160]
... let him look to which is the best of food and bring you provision from it and let him be cautious ...
[Al-Qur’an 018:019]

All types of animals are lawful to be eaten whether those living on land or in the water except those animals specifically forbidden in the Holy Writings revealed by the Almighty Creator and the sayings of the Prophet with clear and well defined injunctions.

We should bear in mind that the abstention from eating pork by the Muslims is based on hygienic grounds and of the cultivation of purity of character. Pork is not poisonous as to kill people right on the spot but latent. Its potentially lethal poisons build up in the body over time. It is certainly not as nourishing as any other meat and it causes prolonged sufferings. Pondering on the wisdom of this saying: “Health is wealth” will lead you to better living and prosperity. The last Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

The Prophet said, “There are two blessings which many people lose: (They are) Health and free time for doing good.
[Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 76, Number 421: Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas]

The Last Testament’s (The Holy Qur’an) verdict on prohibition of Pork

The main purpose of a True Religion must be to build an ideal community in this world; a religion that promotes moral, political and economic well; social harmony and peace, as well as good health of its believers or followers.

Abstention from eating flesh of swine is one of the obligation a Muslim must observe to attain purity of the soul and of the human nature. The believers in Islam, sincerely believe in the Holy Qur’an as the Word of Almighty Allah and the The Last Testament, revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) which says:

O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship. He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
[Al-Qur’an 002:172-173]
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. They ask you, [O Muhammad], what has been made lawful for them. Say, “Lawful for you are [all] good foods and [game caught by] what you have trained of hunting animals which you train as Allah has taught you. So eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allah upon it, and fear Allah.” Indeed, Allah is swift in account.
[Al-Qur’an 005:003-004]
Say, “I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine - for indeed, it is impure - or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.
[Al-Qur’an 006:145]
Then eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allah , if it is [indeed] Him that you worship. He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
[Al-Qur’an 016:114-115]

Biblical aspect of the prohibition

Such prohibition is also found in the Bible

Health means the physical and mental well-being and freedom from diseases and pain. There are several passages in the Bible, articulating that because of sin (a transgression of the law of God) God afflicted human beings with maladies.

Then Moses cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the LORD made a decree and a law for them, and there he tested them. He said, “If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.
[Bible, Exodus 015:025-026]
for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron. Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities. They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.
[Bible, Psalm 107:016-020]

Both human experience and scientific data have confirmed the commandments concerning healthcare issues, found in the Holy Scriptures. The prohibition of pork consumption is an example of such a commandment.

However, of those that chew the cud or that have a split hoof completely divided you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the coney. Although they chew the cud, they do not have a split hoof; they are ceremonially unclean for you. The pig is also unclean; although it has a split hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their carcasses. Of all the creatures living in the water, you may eat any that has fins and scales. But anything that does not have fins and scales you may not eat; for you it is unclean.
[Bible, Deuteronomy 014:007-010]

Old Testament

The Jews and the different christian sects and denominations believe in the Old Testament. Adherents of other religions alleged that the prohibition was already superseded by the New Testament. This cogent argumentation is inconclusive. No one can specifically point out that Jesus Christ (PBUH) lifted the prohibition. On the contrary, he upheld it, he declared:

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
[Bible, Matthew 005:017]

Jesus Christ (PBUH) was obviously referring to the existing Law of his time, the Mosaic Law! in which the Law prohibiting pig as article of food is mentioned.

There are some that only chew the cud or only have a split hoof, but you must not eat them. The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you. The coney, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you. The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you. And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you. Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams, you may eat any that have fins and scales. But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales—whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water—you are to detest. And since you are to detest them, you must not eat their meat and you must detest their carcasses. Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be detestable to you.
[Bible, Leviticus 011:004-012]
Every animal that has a split hoof not completely divided or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them will be unclean.
[Bible, Leviticus 011:026]

In addition, the book of Prophet Isaiah said:

Who sit among the graves and spend their nights keeping secret vigil; who eat the flesh of pigs, and whose pots hold broth of unclean meat; who say, ‘Keep away; don’t come near me, for I am too sacred for you!’ Such people are smoke in my nostrils, a fire that keeps burning all day. “See, it stands written before me: I will not keep silent but will pay back in full; I will pay it back into their laps-
[Bible, Isaiah 065:004-005]

New Testament

Despite the Biblical injunction prohibiting pork as food, still people of other religious persuations insist on finding ways and reasons to justify their consumption of prohibited animals arguing that said Biblical prohibition was already superseded in the New Testament when in certainty, no one can specifically point out that Jesus Christ (PBUH) indeed lifted the prohibition. On the contrary, Jesus (PBUH) declared:

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
[Bible, Matthew 005:017]

The fact is, we will find in Mark 005:001-020 that Jesus (PBUH) even permitted the foul spirits (evil spirits) possessing a man to enter into the herd of swine. Since the flesh of pig is unlawful for the Jews, to eat and since it is considered unclean, (Bible, Leviticus 011:004-012) consequently, the Jews are not to keep or raise them. This Biblical account states that Jesus (PBUH) punished the owners of the swine; destroyed their unlawful livelihood and at the same time showed that pig is the habitat of unclean spirits.

The only provision in the New Testament alluded to their argument is in Acts 010:010-016. Without reading the whole context, one would be inclined to interpret it to mean that God abrogated His previous command found on Deuteronomy 014:007-010. An alleged apparition of Peter on Acts 010:010-016 is alleged to supersede Deuteronomy 014:007-010, however, nowhere in the Bible is it mentioned that Peter actually slaughtered and ate the unclean animals he saw in his apparition. The correct interpretation of this apparition was shown to him in Acts 010:025-028. Acts 010:010-016 therefore, carries an allegorical connotation, referring explicitly to the Gentile nations or non-Jewish nations. Peter was told not to call the Gentiles common and unclean because God’s mercy, blessing and forgiveness also encompasses the Non Jews and life eternal also awaits the penitent.

Some Christians say that, after the vision by St. Peter, God cleansed all animals and made them fit and lawful for human consumption. If ALL animals are cleansed by Peter’s vision, this includes dogs, cats, vultures, and rats: but you just don’t see people getting excited about a cat-meat sandwich like they do over barbecued pork or bacon. Others say that it was Paul who rescinded the law forbidding pork to humans, in order to appease the Romans, who enjoyed the taste of pig-meat. Many excuses have been given, but none are very sound.

In the Bible, Jesus (PBUH) likened to a dog and pig those people whom after receiving divine teaching failed to profit from them and abuses them for self-serving purposes:

Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.
[Bible, Matthew 007:006]

The book of Isaiah 066, is an oracle of the new heavens and the new earth prepared for the believers. Within the context, Isaiah 066:017, God condemns people’s practices such as eating the flesh of pigs, reptiles, and rats.

Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following the one in the midst of those who eat the flesh of pigs and rats and other abominable things—they will meet their end together,” declares the LORD.
[Bible, Isaiah 066:017]

Therefore, the prohibition on the eating of unclean animals was not abrogated during the New Testament times. God will still punish the transgressors in the fire that will never quench. This will occur during the new heavens and the new earth.

Medical aspects of the prohibition

Pig belong to the forbidden animals, and not allowed to be eaten by the believers. Abstention from eating pork is a measure to safeguard health. It is the most avaricious, slovenly and greedy of all domestic animals, devours virtually anything, including human excrement. Amongst all animals, pig is the breeding ground of harmful germs, microbes and parasites. It’s meat serves as carrier of diseases to mankind. It is this very reason that made it unfit for human consumption.

The pig is one of the filthiest animals. It lives and thrives on muck, faeces and dirt. It is the best scavenger that I know that God has produced. In the villages they don’t have modern toilets and the villagers excrete in the open air. Very often excreta is cleared by pigs. Some may argue that in advanced countries like USA, UK, Australia, etc. pigs are bred in very clean and hygienic conditions. Even in these hygienic conditions the pigs are kept together in sties. No matter how hard you try to keep them clean they are filthy by nature. They eat and enjoy their own as well as their neighbour’s excreta.

Diseases caused by pork

Pig’s bodies contain many toxins, worms and latent diseases. Although some of these infestations are harbored in other animals, modern veterinarians say that pigs are far more predisposed to these illnesses than other animals. This could be because pigs like to scavenge and will eat any kind of food, including dead insects, worms, rotting carcasses, excreta (including their own), garbage, and other pigs.

The following lists show germs or parasites that are found in pork and some diseases caused by them. Many of these diseases are contagious while some are proven fatal. This proves that the more science advances the more Islam is shown correct as a religion of God.

Parasitic Diseases

Trichinosis
It is caused by Trichinella spiralis or Trichina worm. It is the most dangerous parasite to man (Rheumatism and muscular pain). The infected persons recover very slowly some die, some reduced to permanent invalids. No one is immune from this disease and there is no cure.

Trichinosis is caused by eating infected raw or insufficiently cooked pork, in which the immature parasite is encysted. When such a piece of meat is eaten, the encysted embryos are set free in the intestines, and develop into full-grown trichinae. From each pair of these, thousands of new embryos may arise in the course of several weeks. As soon as this new generation of embryos is produced, they make their way into the wall of the bowel, and thence wander through the circulation system, finally depositing themselves between the fibers of the voluntary muscles, where they become encysted. The first symptoms develop in the course of two weeks after the infection. The disease is characterized by fever and severe pain in the limbs and muscles, oedema of the soft tissues, and eosinophilia in the blood. The infection may result in severe damage to the nervous system (in the form of encephalitis), cardiac muscle (miocarditis), as well as other complications.

A common misconception about pork is that if it is cooked well, these ova die. In a research project undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from Trichura Tichurasis, twenty two had cooked the pork very well. This indicates that the ova present in the pork do not die under normal cooking temperature.

Despite the therapeutic advances, contemporary medicine does not provide an effective cure for trichinosis. The only efficient protection, therefore, is based on prevention, or giving up eating pork. Although the meat is subject to thorough inspection in slaughter-houses, as well as by the Sanitary Inspection, this procedure does not give a one hundred percent guarantee, as was clearly shown by the outbreak in Moscow.

Taenia solium (Pork tapeworm)
There are approximately 50 million cases of infection world-wide annually. The worm causes malnourishment of the person leading to anemia, diarrhea, extreme depression melancholia and digestive disturbances. Cysticercosis means that larva enter the blood stream then settle down in one or more of the vital organs of the body, for example: brain, liver, lungs or spinal cord. They grow and encapsulate, inducing pressure to the system around, resulting in dangerous diseases (diarrhea, digestive disorder, anemia, chronic invalidation, memory loss, heart attack, blindness, liver damage). It can damage almost all the organs of the body.

The taeniasis is caused by the brain’s infestation by the larvae form of the pork tapeworm, the gastrointestinal parasite, and may constitute up to 1.3 percent of the intracranial volume. The parasite’s onchosphere travels through the mucous membranes of the blood vessels into the portal circulatory system, and is thence transported throughout the body, infecting various internal organs, as well as the brain. The course of the disease is remittent and, symptomatically, is characterized by the presence of several niduses. The infestation may often be manifested in the development of the epileptic syndrome, meningism and the increase of the intracranial pressure.

Ascariasis
Caused by Ascaris suum or Large Roundworm. Ascariasis may lead to digestive disturbances, appendicitis, obstructive jaundice. The infestation is known to cause dyspepsia. Adult worms feed on digestion products of the host. Children with marginal diet may be susceptible to protein, caloric, or vitamin A deficiency, resulting in retarded growth and increased susceptibility to infectious diseases such as malaria. Intestinal (usually ileal), common duct, pancreatic, or appendiceal obstruction may occur from the large and tangled worms.

Ancylostomiasis or Hookworms
Ancylostomiasis may lead to anemia, oedema, heart failure or retarded growth (mental and physical), tuberculosis, diarrhea and typhoid. The patient may become anemic as the worms feed on the individual’s blood. The loss of blood leads to a loss of iron and protein; causing difficulty in breathing, pale complexion, tiredness and weakness, fast heartbeat, generalized swelling or bloating and impotence.

Fats in Pigs

Pork contains more fats than other meats. Therefore, people who consume pork are more prone to obesity due to the high percentage of fat in pork. In this group, blood cholesterol level is frequently higher than normal; pork-eaters are more susceptible to arteriosclerosis, which may result in cardiovascular diseases, malfunction of the brain blood-circulation, vascular pathology of the lower limbs, sudden death, etc. Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack. It is not surprising that over 50% of Americans suffer from hypertension.

Pork is difficult to digest, which may be the cause of many chronic diseases of the digestive system. Ulcerous skin infections are more frequently found within the pork-consuming group. Of great interest is the research into the hydrolysis of pork fat, its deposition in the human body, and the extent of its utilization. There is a theory that animal fat, acquired by the consumption of the herbivorous animals’ meat, undergoes a process of hydrolysis and is thence synthesized anew and deposited in the body as human fat. Pork fat, however, is not subject to hydrolysis and is consequently deposited in the human fat tissue as pork fat. Since the proper utilization of this fat deposit is problematic, in order to produce energy, the body burns up the stock of glucose, which is essential for brain activity. This process brings about a chronic feeling of hunger, which, in turn, results in a vicious circle: although having a substantial fat build-up, the person is constantly consuming additional food without feeling satisfied.

Other Diseases

Flesh of the pork is hard to digest and may lead to chronic digestive disturbances. Pimples, boils, cysts are common in pork eaters. These are some of the parasites and diseases found in pork and/or the skin of pigs and certainly there are many more. There is still no means of killing these parasites, in the tissues, neither has anyone found a method of expelling them, even produced any specific treatment for the diseases.

Conclusion

From what we have read from the Scriptures of the christians, scientific findings, The Last Testament (The Holy Qur’an) and the saying of the Last Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) about health and the flesh of the swine, we now come to the conclusion that eating of swine flesh or Pork is Sin and Sickness. Therefore, we must protect ourselves for it is a fact that health is a trust and best blessing bestowed upon us by Almighty Allah.
